At the end of August, center back and team captain Senja Salo suffered a serious knee injury in the match against PK-35 Helsingfors. Now the club announces that she is in the lineup also in 2025.
”Even before the injury, we planned to extend her contract. Following through on these plans after the injury feels natural from a humane perspective. She got injured as our player, and we take responsibility. Additionally, we will get a strong player back in the summer who will make a great impact on the pitch.” Head Coach Daniel Norrmén

Senja, how are you feeling today, and how has the time since the injury been?
– Today, I’m feeling really good! The past months have been tough but also educational. I even had to learn how to walk again. Now I’m slowly but surely rebuilding my mobility and strength.
What kind of injury did you sustain, and how is your rehabilitation going?
– My ACL and ligaments were torn, and my meniscus was also damaged. At the moment, I’m focusing on upper body training, cycling, and various gym exercises. The focus is on strengthening my quads and hamstrings while improving balance and knee control.
How do you deal with the mental challenges?
– I try to think that every day brings me closer to my goal. It’s hard not to play, but injuries are part of being a football player. This process has made me mentally stronger and taught me to appreciate small things, like walking or spending time with the team.
When can we expect to see you back on the pitch?– If everything goes as planned, I’ll be back in June.
What are your expectations for next season?
– I’m expecting a good season for the team. We want to improve on last year and will work hard to reach our goals.
Has it been difficult to stay connected with the team?
– Not at all. I was with the team during the final part of the season, traveled with them, and supported them from the stands. Even though I couldn’t train with them, I’ve spent a lot of time with the team outside of training.
What advice would you give to other athletes dealing with injuries?
– It’s okay to have tough days. Injuries are part of the journey, and you’ll come out of rehabilitation physically and mentally stronger. You also learn to appreciate football even more.
Do you have a message for the fans?
– Thank you for your support! It means so much to us players and the staff. I hope to see you at WHA next season!
What do you do off the pitch?
– I love going to cafés, singing, spending time with friends, and watching other sports like volleyball and basketball. I’m also looking forward to continuing to coach kids on Åland next season.
